SPI IS Helping Local youth employment and making sure visitors see more of the huge site of chan chan
The Site
Chan Chan is the largest pre-hispanic city in South America and was the capital of the Chimu Empire before they were defeated and invaded by the Inca. The city spans 20 square km and was designated a World Heritage Site in 1986. It receives almost 200,000 visitors a year. However, tourists only visit a small portion of the ruins due the large distances involved.
The Community
Despite the large number of visitors to the site, local communities do not see many of the benefits. Tourists rarely spend money in these communities and locals have seen the costs of living increase due to urban development. Communities adjacent to the site have poor public services, little infrastructure and few economic opportunities.
The Project
In collaboration with National Geographic, SPI is expanding its successful BiciTour program to Chan Chan. Young people from local communities will conduct visitors around the site on bicycles. This allows tourists a much better experience of the site, and gives young people much needed employment. Our participants are trained in local archaeology, bike maintenance and business skills!
Achievements
BiciTour Chan Chan has launched and local youths are ready to receive you and show you their site!
The Big thing we have learned
Young people can offer a dynamic and new perspective on local heritage.
The Future
Come to the site and take a tour! Help these young people have a sustainable job and be proud of their heritage.
