DEEPSAL, a project run by the Council for British Research in the Levant (CBRL), carried out research for over a year in two locations in southern Jordan with outstanding Neolithic archaeology to understand how these sites contribute to the economic, social and cultural life of local communities, and how this might be improved to benefit people and sites.  The research done by this project was aimed at long-term development projects focused on two communities, Beidha and Basta, to bring sustainable economic opportunities to local people. SPI partnered with the CBRL, contributing to project design and data collection methodologies, as well as advising on community development strategies involving heritage, working with the main researcher in Jordan. As a result of this project and SPI’s involvement, recommendations from the final report were taken up by other organization in Jordan doing similar community work.
