Congratulations to Sustainable Preservation Initiative’s Director of Latin America, Dr. Luis Jaime Castillo Butters, who has been named the Peruvian Minister of Culture! On July 8, 2019, Dr. Castillo Butters was sworn in by President Martin Vizcarra in the nation's capital city of Lima. Although we must bid farewell to Luis Jaime as our Director of Latin America, SPI is thrilled about his new role which includes preserving the cultural heritage and traditions of Peru. SPI’s loss is the country’s gain and Peru is fortunate to have him as Minister of Culture.
As SPI’s head of Latin America, Dr. Castillo Butters has overseen the success of all of our projects in Peru. Some of these projects include:
Pachacamac (SISAN)
Dr. Castillo Butters has been one of the most innovative figures working in Latin American archaeology over the past two decades. Before becoming Minister of Culture, Dr. Castillo Butters served as Deputy Minister of Cultural Heritage and Cultural Industries for Peru. He is a Professor of Archaeology at the Pontifícia Universidad Católica del Perú, where he was also Dean of International Relations and Studies from 1994 – 2010. Dr. Castillo Butters has led the San Jose de Moro Archaeological Program since 1991, and is widely published on the Moche, Pre-Columbian Art and the cultural heritage of Peru. Luis Jaime has been a leading force behind SPI in Peru and is passionate about local communities being able to make a living with archaeological sites. Furthermore, in April 2019, Dr. Castillo Butters was elected as a Foreign Associate to the National Academy of Science (NAS) for his distinguished and continuing achievements in original research.
Thank you, Luis Jaime for all that you have done in building futures and saving pasts while working with SPI. We wish you the best as the new Minister of Culture!
